Trip To Sixteenth Consultation of Methodist Bishops

My reflections from the 2025 Sixteenth Consultation of Methodist Bishops.

I arrived in Atlanta, Georgia, on Monday, March 17, 2025, eager to participate in the 2025 Sixteenth Consultation of Methodist Bishops. This year’s theme, “Reclaiming the Gospel: Resisting Christian Nationalism and Rethinking Love for the Way,” resonated deeply with me.

The Pan-Methodist Bishops Consultation marked a significant milestone, celebrating 40 years of Pan-Methodist Resistance and Renewal. Our gathering began with spiritual filled worship service on Sunday evening. A powerful devotional message, Monday morning.

An informative exercise, where each bishop shared their name, denomination, current assignment,(s),  and a word that captured their sentiment about our current times. My word I chose was “Optimism.” I firmly believe that optimism offers us hope for a brighter future, even in the face and midst of challenges facing us.

Throughout the consultation, we engaged in thought-provoking sessions, tackling critical issues such as:

1. Policy and Action Development: Exploring innovative approaches to address pressing concerns.

2. Decolonizing Methodist Liturgy and Education: Examining ways to revitalize our worship and educational practices.

3. Protecting the Least of These and Resisting Evil: Discussing strategies to safeguard the vulnerable and combat injustice and inequality.

I was honored to be appointed Chair of the Apartheid Resilience Committee, a role that underscores our commitment to combating systemic injustices.

The 2025 Pan-Methodist Bishops Consultation was a historic gathering of bishops from across the globe, united in our quest for greater unity, collaboration, and social justice. Through panel discussions, networking opportunities, and worship services, we strengthened relationships, shared best practices, and reaffirmed our dedication to the Gospel.

I extend my sincerest appreciation to Bishop Francine A. Brookins, of the African Methodist Episcopal Church and President of the Pan-Methodist Bishops Consultation, for her exceptional leadership throughout this gathering. Her guidance and vision were instrumental in shaping our discussions and outcomes.

As I reflect on this enriching experience, I remain optimistic about our collective potential to create a lasting positive change and promote a more just, peaceful, prosperous, inclusive, and compassionate world.
