A Heartwarming Homecoming: Revisiting St. Paul AME Church in Irmo, South Carolina.

Yesterday, I had the marvelous privilege of worshiping at St. Paul AME Church in Irmo, South Carolina, a congregation I was blessed to pastor from 1984 to 1989. It all began with Church Security Officers meeting me to park my car and joyfully receiving me back to that sacred house. As I walked through the doors, I was met with warm smiles and enthusiastic greetings from the members.

During my tenure, the church experienced exponential growth, transforming from a small wooden structure with a handful of members to a thriving community. We transitioned from hosting two services a month to weekly gatherings, as God bestowed upon us an incredible increase.

Following the service, I felt led to visit Sister Theresa Corley, a devoted member and widow of Brother Horace Corley. Her family, including her Brother-in-law, Leroy Corley, played a significant role in the church’s growth during my pastorate. As I arrived at her residence, Sister Theresa was overwhelmed with joy, and we shared a heartfelt reunion.

Several members joined us at her home, including Brother Larry Haltiwanger, who stayed with us until we concluded our visit with prayer. It was a blessing to witness Sister Theresa’s vibrant spirit and mental acuity at 85 years young.

As we reminisced about our time together at St. Paul AME Church, I was reminded of the countless blessings God bestowed upon us. Those five years, from October 1984 to February 1989, were truly transformative, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to have played a part in the church’s growth.

May God continue to bless Sister Theresa Corley and the entire St. Paul AME Church family.

Bishop David R. Daniels Jr.
